Hi I recently joined this group as my 15 yr old has terrible anxiety and is terrified about starting a new school as her last school refused to allow her into school due to panic attacks and self harm. She developed her anxiety issues after trying to help a school friend who was self harming and suicidal, she saw things that she couldn't cope with and felt guilty that she couldn't help her, the friend ended up in a priory, but this made my daughter worse as she started worrying about her coming back. My daughter has flashbacks to events and has extreme negative thoughts. when she started expressing suicidal thoughts CAMHS became involved and we have a fantastic key worker. Her school decided they could not keep her safe at school despite the fact her psychiatrist and key worker felt she should be in school. The school felt it was appropriate to keep her out of school and try to get her into a medical Pru. At this point my daughter felt safe at school and wanted to go but the longer the refused to allow her in, the more anxious she became about attending. The school backed down but refused to allow the measures put into her care plan which essentially meant my daughter could not attend. At this point I applied for a school transfer. This is a terrifying step for a child suffering from severe anxiety. She managed one day and was so distresses that camhs have advised i dont send her back. She hasn't been diagnosed with school phobia, just anxiety but as her anxiety relates a lot to social situations school is about as bad as it gets . I am grateful that CAMHS and the intensive support team have been fantastic.
