I've lost count the number of parents that have contacted me about their bad experiences of school by way of lack of co-operation and understanding.  As this was my experience too, I have felt compelled to petition for change.  If you feel you would like to sign your name and help make a difference, please click below:

HYPNOSIS

Posted by Kay Mawson on September 17, 2013 at 12:05 AM Comments comments (1)

I wanted to share this with you all.  It was taken from a parent - with permission, from my Facebook Group Page and thought it may interest your all: :)

"Well yesterday my 15yo Daughter had her first session of hypnosis. Must admit I was skeptical that it would help but we were both desperate enough to try anything. The counselor is a credentialed mental health nurse and it was obvious very early that she totally understood the condition and how debilitating it is. The hypnosis is all about addressing the sub conscious. She explained that DD's cognitive brain wanted desperately to do the right thing but her sub conscious had learned over a long period that the best way to avoid feeling anxiety was to stay home and not go to school. The pattern had become so ingrained that it was now an automatic response. DD came away feeling light as a feather. She hasn't been to school for 2 weeks and has only managed 1 - 2 days all term at best. This morning she woke up, said she felt fine - got out of bed without drama (I usually spent up to an hour coaxing her out from under the doona), got dressed and came skipping out to me saying "I feel normal"... dropped her at school and she got out of the car with a smile and said "see ya". Early days I know but I am rejoicing today"

ITV This Morning

Posted by Kay Mawson on August 29, 2013 at 4:20 PM Comments comments (0)

We were kindly asked to appear on ITV This Morning for the 3rd September 2013 but we cannot appear.  I have my daughter's psychological tests on Monday... we've waited 4 years to get help and finally this appointment has arrived.  I'm so so sure that she is Dyslexic and I feel that my Daughter must come first.  She also starts  senior school on the 3rd September.  She didn't have a great experience during her transition day and I really dont want to miss her first day of school.

I did ask if they could post pone the 'story' but they didn't feel it would be appropriate due to the date the schools return and have managed to get another mum.  The positivity from this is that the story is still running and awareness is still being raised.  Im only sorry that we couldnt be the ones on the sofa to represent this issue.  Sorry if anyone feels let down.  My daughter needs care too.

It is possible that 'Our Story' will appear in The Sun or some other Media......watch this space !

Network Map

Some of the mums have said to me in the past how nice it would be "if only there was a place to meet others".  Whilst the Facebook Group Page has been a fantastic success, parents have a desire to meet other in person.  I had the idea to ask mums for the first part of their post-code and then try to come up with something for pairing one another up so that slowly, over time, small groups could come together and meet every so often and put the world to rights.

After pondering and wondering how to do it, one of the mums said "build another app" .....hmmmmm. Its an expense to do so but there is plenty on the internet that is free to access so I keyed in 'pin map' only to end up with a finished product of a pin map of families wishing to meet others like themselves.

Why dont you take a look  ;)

I thought it was time to try and gather some information together from the families struggling with School Phobia/Refusal and have therefore put together a POLL.  Please spend 5 minutes to answer less than 10 questions and help provide some answers....solid answers about your experience of this condition.

I WANT TO TAKE THE POLL

BBC Newsround

I've had contact from BBC Newsround on two occasions and have chatted to researchers looking into writing a piece to cover School Refusal. They're looking to speak to families who are dealing with this condition to help put their piece together. Remember that these researchers haven't any idea what this condition is so they're asking us to call/email to help them understand. If you're interested in helping out and PLEASE remember what coverage of this condition would do for soooo many families......

We're Growing

The FACEBOOK page and website is growing. Should I be sad that this means that the numbers of children suffering is greater or glad, that the website and group page is there to help families in such a distressing time. A catch 22 I think. I'm pleased that if its going to happen anyway that families have some support. :D

ANDROID APP

Posted by Kay Mawson on May 19, 2013 at 11:50 AM Comments comments (0)

A boring Sunday and Im getting over a nasty virus/cold.  What better way to spend then day than to research how to create an App for Apple or Android.  I suppose you have to have a little bit of a cyber brain to do it and Ive done it.  Came up with the idea late last night whilst nursing some sore ribs coughing and less than 24 hours later and a few £s less, Ive managed to get the APP published.

Im sure Ill be faced with issues but hey, if it means im helping more parents out there and putting a stop to bad judgements then great.  Money well worth investing.

Quite simply called : "School Refusal or Phobia".

What are the Consequences of Ignoring our Children

Posted by Kay Mawson on January 31, 2013 at 6:10 AM Comments comments (0)

I have been contacted by many adults now, most of who are parents with their heads spinning, emotions running high, tired and not knowing what they are going to do next.  If they are anything like me, they were or are probably feeling sick with nerves themselves about what they were going to face at the school gates with their child the following day.  BUT, some adults who have contacted me have been those children who were dragged to the school gates kicking and screaming, pleading, crying and desperate to be heard.  As adults they can reflect and know exactly what was happening to them.

What do all these adults have in common? They were all suffering from School Phobia.  Were they listened to by their teachers? No !  Were they given the help they needed when their parents took them to Doctors and Psychiatrists etc? No!  Were they deemed as difficult children who were simply attention seeking? Yes!!  And are there lasting consequences to this....ignoring the child? Yes !!  So what is it these adults are now telling me?  Are they telling me " Oh that was an awful time but Im happily married now with children and Ive got a great Job"? Definitely Not !!

The three that have been brave enough to talk to me have all told me that they still suffer from anxiety disorders, find that there are restrictions to their lives and wish that this information was available when they were children so that they did not have to suffer the way they did.  Strange though as a decade or so later and I feel not much has changed. Do we really want these consequences for our children because this is what the lack of knowledge in school, education departments and court systems (attendance) is doing.

Has the Word Spread?

As many of you know, I am behind the FACEBOOK Group Page for School Phobia too.  This has probably been the most resourceful way for parents of School Phobic children to connect, vent and talk to each other and gain some support.  I have connected through so many people on the group page, including some children themselves.  Although, most of the time, posts are from mothers, deeply desperate for answers, as they watch their child's life turned upside down by this condition.

To often, parents state they are then persued over their child's lack of attendence and have been taken to court.  Many of you will be reading this having been down this route.  I myself was criticised over attendance issues and my son was told his mother would be sent to prison if he did not stop his behaviour.  A false threat used to put a stop to what was felt to be behaviour well within my son's control i.e. picking and choosing.  A prison threat hardly helped a child suffering from Seperation Anxiety.  So, reading about other parents' unecessary pressures and suffering at the hands school and authorities angered me and drove me to insert the 'tabs' on this website "News & Headlines" & "Help & Advice" so parents could print/source and use information to help them fight their battle.

However, this week, I was contacted by a lovely lady in New York USA who told our FACEBOOK page her story.  She has an almighty battle on her hands with her child and her heart goes out to her and here comes the almighty BUT.  But, the school staff and professional team advised this particular parent about the condition of School Phobia and have offered her and her 16 year old son FULL SUPPORT.  Now I know that this is in USA, I know you are saying that to yourselves right now.  This point it, a school has taken a step to put support in place.  I think this is fantastic and I am wondering if word is really getting out there about the reality of this condition. Let us hope so.:D
